Spaces    October, 1996

Spaces
Open
Private
Public
Personal
It's the places in between
           You and me

           Us and them

           Then and now
Guarded
Restricted
Names for the emptiness that exist
After everything is filled
It's the spaces that become important

Spaces
between the digits on the clock
The chime of the hours
The numbers of the calendar
Used or wasted
Never recycled
History
Making the legends
Healing the wounds

All  roads lead to KaraKorum
Center of the earth

Seat of the great Khans
Only an empty space on the vacant steppe
You have to have permission
To cross the spaces
Be in a tour group to visit
In a world where the spaces are
Cataloged
Mapped
Crossed by super sonic aircraft
Monitored by satellite
A fee is involved
And don't forget the immunization shots
For a visa stamp on a space in your passport

Spaces
Making a difference
Between cities and states
Imaginary lines that Border
                                            differentiate
                                                              designate

Between two dancers on the floor
Lovers in the sheets
Relationships with space
             To grow
                        In fondness
                                          Intensity
                                                      Mature
Spaces to fill with love
                                         Tenderness
                                                         Acceptance
The final frontier
The fleeting moment
When a runner escapes the earth
Encircled by spaces
Where the spirit dwells
In and around us
We try to be in contact with
                        SPACES
Breathing it in, exhaling it out
Exchanging with another human
Those intimate spaces
The hardest to fill

Between the molecules
The atoms
You'll find spaces
Filled with laws of physics
Rules for society
Pride and prejudice
               Beliefs and theories
                          Money to buy
                                     Trophies to recognize
SPACES
Are nothing more than mortar
Filling the voids between the bricks
Holding us together into a massive building
Community
                Family
Yet never completely filled
No matter how hard we try
There will always be
Must be
                In our world
                In our hearts
                In our souls

                  SPACES
